Furzedown Rec proposals issued to London Borough of Wandsworth
Following an extensive community consultation and design process, Curve Studio have submitted proposals for Furzedown Rec to planners at LB Wandsworth.
Curve Studio worked with Enable LC on behalf of the London Borough of Wandsworth to prepare proposals for the regeneration of the recreation ground into a more welcoming and engaging space for everyone in the local community.
Currently, the Rec’ presents a labyrinth of well-worn spaces within a maze of fences. Tennis, football, basketball, skate and play all jostle for space in the middle of the park whilst the outer edges are characterised by shadeless and poorly defined areas of flat grass.
Curve Studio framed project options and opportunities in a variety of different ways to ensure broad community engagement, to test ideas and establish priorities.
The consultation process was both online and in-person, with formal meetings, casual drop-in sessions and on-site interviews. The studio team even got involved in park events to watch, listen and gain a deeper understanding of the neighbourhood’s community.
The new design for the park prioritises community needs and aspirations, balancing activity, nature, and social interaction. Key features include a nature-based playground with traditional elements, a redesigned skate area, and a transformed pavilion area with improved circulation and allowing for future development of a café/toilets. Additional enhancements focus on improving flow, softening the landscape, adding shade, and creating informal seating opportunities.
